In 1986 Emergency "Informed Field Guides" were introduced to the Fire Rescue Services throughout the United States. They are continually updated to provide information and training for the Fire Rescue Services. Spinal injuries instructions in particular stress the importance of immobilizing the entire spine. Cervical supports are commonly used to stabilize the neck and head. However the lower back is left unsupported during the trip to the hospital, allowing it to flex. |

Because of the uneven condition of roads, they cause continual fluctuation of the lower thoracic and lumbar (arched area) of the patient's spinal column during transport to hospitals. Tests have shown that during transport, irregularities in the roads, bridges and railroad crossings cause continual deflection in the arched area of the back, approaching 1/2 inch. These deflections in certain injuries can cause further damage to the spinal column and the possibility of permanent paralysis and in most cases cause unnecessary trauma to the patient. |

In three rapid steps rescue personnel can provide enhanced lumbar support prior to patient transport |
